The short version

A push-to-talk Android app where every phone on a private channel hears the active speaker — across Wi-Fi or mobile data, with a provider-neutral Node.js relay.

The challenge

Wanted a walkie-talkie for small groups that works across networks without pairing devices.

The work behind it

  • Android client with hold-to-talk PCM streaming, always-listening foreground mode and automatic reconnection.
  • Node.js WebSocket relay that forwards live audio without storing it; token-based channel membership.

What changed

  • Working MVP — mostly an excuse to build something end to end with AI coding tools.
